INSTRUCTIONS TO BURNING YOUR OMU MANDLE:
- First, place your candle in an open area that is free from any foreign materials. Make sure that the area you place your candle on is fire resistant and level.
- Second, make sure that your wick is trimmed to ¼” before lighting. Having a candle wick that is too long can be a fire hazard.
- Third, light a match or using a lighter to light your trimmed wick. Now enjoy your candle! We recommend that the first time you burn your candle, you burn it until the entire surface of the candle is melted in order to avoid tunneling. This usually takes one to two hours depending on candle size.
- Do not burn candle for more than 4 hours at a time. Stop use when only ¼” wax remains in container.
BENEFITS OF BURNING CANDLES:
Candles have been used for over 5000 years (that we know of). With the practical use of creating light being replaced with electricity, why have candles maintained popularity? Here are three research proven reasons why simply burning a candle is good for your health and mood:
- Travel through time: Okay, while the Delorean may not be anywhere in sight to take you back to the future, scent has been proven to be intertwined with memory and emotion. Because smell and emotion are stored as one memory together in the brain and because of the nose’s anatomy to the brain, “smell and memory seem to be very tightly linked,” said Harvard’s Venkatesh Murthy, Raymond Leo Erikson Life Sciences Professor. Certain smells can create reflective memories and therefore positive emotions. So find a candle that brings joy and light it up!
- Set the mood: Candles can transform the ambiance of any space. Using those emotions from years past, find a scent that creates the emotion and feeling you want. Candles can often create a very serene and unique atmosphere. According to WebMD, This connection between mood of a space and scent happens because odor molecules in fragrance bind to proteins along your nasal passage and create electrical signals. These signals can interact with a part of your brain called the limbic brain and affect your emotions, thoughts, and memory.
- Lower stress: Burning a candle can help lower stress and promote relaxation. These benefits come more from the scent than the candle itself. All candles from Omu contain essential oils. These are natural compounds from plants that have medicinal benefits. Each essential oil and scent were specifically chosen for relaxation and stress management.
OTHER CANDLE BURNING SUGGESTIONS:
Tunneling of candles what happens when only a small portion of the wax around the wick or the middle of the candle melts while the candle is burning. This leaves the outside portion, closest to the container edge unmelted. Instead of the wax burning from surface side to surface side.
This can be a problem because once the wick descends deeper into the surrounding wax, the flame won’t be able to get enough oxygen to sustain itself, causing the candle to go out. And it can also drastically reduce the burn-time of your candle.
How to Avoid Tunneling
- Make sure the first time you burn a candle, keep wick lit until the entire surface of the candle is melted. Usually this will be for at least one to two continuous hours depending on candle size. This will set a precedent for the wax to melt from side to side every burn afterwards.
What to do if tunneling occurs
- Option 1: The aluminum circle method
- Trim the wick to ¼ inch and remove any debris inside the tunnel.
- Cover the top of the candle with aluminum foil. Cutting or folding a small opening (around 1-inch) in the center of the aluminum foil to allow the wick to still breath.
- Light the candle for a few hours until the top surface of wax has completely melted and smoothed over.
- Option 2: The hair drying (or heat gun) method
- Trim the wick to ¼ inch and remove any debris inside the tunnel.
- Using a heat gun (if you have one) or hair dryer on the highest setting, heat the wax on the top surface of the candle. You can carefully poke at the unmelted wax on the sides with a toothpick to help it melt faster.
- Continue heating until the entire top surface of wax has completely melted and smoothed over.
- Relight your candle and allow it to burn for at least 30 minutes or until you can no longer see any tunneling.
